[edit] General

As we have stated before. A Profile is another way that we as a Participant can tell other Participants about things that are important to us.

This allows us to "liven-up" the rather dull world of statistics and Work Units processed and the like.

We even get the opportunity to add an image to the Profile to show off our inner beauty (this is especially true in my case as I have no outer beauty, and it is entirely possible that I do not have any inner beauty either).

In this form we are allowed to create your "Profile".

[edit] Section by Section

The form we use to create the Profile is one of the longest in the Web Site. This is due to the two very large data entry boxes.

[edit] Form Top: Personal Background

The top entry box allows you to enter information that you would like to display that describes your personal background. There is a limit on the total number of characters that you can enter. Whatever the value of the current limit it will be shown at the top of the section for entering the personal information. Some BBCode Tags will work here so you can do some formatting. There is a link to the a quick example guide on the Project's Web Site. You can also look in our BOINC "How-To" Guide, Using BBCode on Project Web Sites.

Here you can see the example where I have filled in the top entry box with my text Profile information. My recommendation is that you compose your Profile text into an off line in a text editor, and when you have it the way that you want, copy and paste it into the form.

In the block that follows, you can see the profile that I composed and then posted in the profile form.

If I read the documentation correctly the total size is about 64 K-Bytes. Though, I would say that if you have that much to say, you should create your own Web Site and talk at length there …

[edit] Form Middle: Opinions about the BOINC Powered Project

I did not snap a picture of another large empty box. So, imagine that the image here also shows a large empty box below the lines of text.

In this box you can enter your opinions about the BOINC Powered Project and make suggestions on the ways that the Project Team can make changes to the program, but only if you put them here and on the Forums. now, if you don't put your opinions on "paper" so to speak, suprising no one, the changes will not happen. Odd the way that works.

[edit] Form Bottom: Misceleneous Profile Information & Submit/Clear

The remaining parts of the form allow the entry of other information.

[edit] Select Your Primary Language

A primary language selection is from a list where you can select your preferred language. As it states, this allows other Participants that speak your language may be able to seek you out and start a dialog.

[edit] Your Picture

Next you have the opportunity to add a picture to your Profile. Like the other options there is a limit set on the maxzimum size of the image that will be allowed. Most image formats will work, but some are better and smaller than others and they would be preferred.

First of all, note that there is a size limitation.

In my case, to protect innocent by-standers and the children, I have used a cartoon character image to project my character (unlike inner and outer beauty; of which I have none, I know I have lots of character because everyone tells me that I am just about the biggest character that they have ever met).

Regardless of what image or image type you select, the images should be one of the following types:

  • GIF
  • JPG or JPEG
  • PNG

You can get a decent JPEG or GIF file that is much smaller than the posted size limitations.

Use the "Choose File" button to get a dialog box that will let you search for the file that you want to use. Once you have found the file that you want to use, select "Ok" or "Choose" depending on what your Operating System uses for the select option. Of course, selecting "Cancel" will not select any file.

Once the file has successfuly been chosen its name will show up next to the "choose" file button (where it says "no file selected" in the example).

To delete your picture, place a check mark in the "Delete" box and then click on the "Submit" button to remove the picture from your profile.

[edit] Submit Your Profile

Last but not least, the buttons that allow you to "Submit" or "Clear" your changes. If you do click "Submit" you will get a page that tells you that your changes were made or a page telling you that they failed (and hopefully an erorr message describing the problem so you can fix that problem).

Pressing "Clear" will clear the form so you can start over.

So, once you have filled in the two text fields, selected your language with the control, and added a small image of yourself, or your dog, or your spouse, or what ever you like … you can save it, or start over.

If you want to add an image to the Profile, use the "Browse …" to select an image to attach to the Profile. This is one feature I have never been able to get to work consistantly. Most of the time I save the changes and nope, no image. This is now suppossed to be fixed.

Ok, once we are done making our changes we can click on either the "Submit" or "Clear" buttons. If we "Submit", our changes are saved.

If we "Clear" it should clear the form.

[edit] Profile Save Outcomes

Ok, so what happens after we push the magic button?

Read on, read on …

Oh, do read on …

If our content was not as it needs to be, then you will see an error message like the example here.

Now, I forced this error, and it can be caused by things like improper file types (the mistake I did here), incorrect file sizes (too large), too much text in one of the fields, and lastly, database errors.

The other error is more commonly seen from the "View" side of the Profile divide, but it is possible to see it from this perspective also.

[edit] Profile Save Success

If our changes did make it into the BOINC Database, we should see this confirmation message displayed.

At the bottom of this page, we have a "View your profile" link that can be used to validate that the changes were saved to the database, and that your Profile looks the way that you would like.

If there is something about it that does not look good, well, we can edit it until it looks the way we would like it to look.
