[edit] General

Preferences, Einstein@Home Web Site Click! "Einstein@Home Specific Preferences" Page

This page allows the Participant to tailor their project participation to their specific needs and desires.

This particular page is for the Einstein@Home Project and the settings on yours might be different from this example. In fact almost certainly will be different. This page shows the summarization of the currently available Preferences and what their values are currently set to at this moment.

Like the Preference Settings in the General Preferences "View or Edit" , you have the ability to set up several preference "Venues" and these can be assigned to the computers you have attached to the specific BOINC Powered Project.

To edit the Project Preferences you would click the "Edit Einstein@Home preferences" link at the bottom of the page to take you to the screen where you can change these Preference Settings.

[edit] Line by Line

There are lots of complications here, because some of the setting changes you can make in the edit page will dramatically change the rows that you will see and so that is going to make this a tricky page to describe.

[edit] Resource Share

The Resource Share is an allocation by you of the processing power of you computer to be applied towards the Project. This setting is not a percentage. If you are only doing work for one BOINC Powered Project it does not matter what the value is in this setting. When you join your second and subsequent BOINC Powered Projects this value and the value in the other Project's Preferences are totaled up and then used to create a proportion that indicates the amount of time to be allocated to that specific BOINC Powered Project.

See the glossary for more details of how the Resource Share and Resource Debt are used to allocate resources to the BOINC Powered Projects. I will just give a couple of examples here.

If we join 2 projects and have both resource share settings at 100, then:

  • Project "A" gets 50%
  • Project "B" gets 50%

If we join 3 projects and have all resource share settings at 100, then:

  • Project "A" gets 33%
  • Project "B" gets 33%
  • Project "C" gets 33%

If we join 4 projects and have all resource share settings at 100, then:

  • Project "A" gets 25%
  • Project "B" gets 25%
  • Project "C" gets 25%
  • Project "D" gets 25%

And so on …

If we join 4 projects and have:

  • Project "A" at 400, and
  • Project "B" at 300, and
  • Project "C" at 200, and
  • Project "D" at 100, and

then:

  • Project "A" gets 40%
  • Project "B" gets 30%
  • Project "C" gets 20%
  • Project "D" gets 10%

[edit] Color Scheme

This setting affects the BOINC Screensaver.

[edit] Should Einstein@Home Send You e-Mail Newsletters?

This is a yes or no setting and controls the projects that might send you an e-Mail update of some kind on the background science or project goals reached, or whatever. If you hate getting e-Mail, set this to No. The default is Yes.

[edit] Should Einstein@Home Show Your Computers On Its Web Site?

One of the more important settings, from a privacy standpoint is the setting to show or hide your computer from other Participants. This is accomplished by this setting in the "Einstein@Home Preferences".

This switch allows you to show or hide your computers from observation by other Participants. In the first example this setting is for the computers to be visible to other Participants.

Note:
The default setting is to show the computers. If you want your computers to be hidden from other Participants, you must change this setting to no.
If you look on the "Account Data" Page you can see this setting in operation. The "Account Data" Page is shown any time that you click on the link for a Participant (for example in the Profiles, Forums, Threads, etc.).

[edit] Default Computer Location

This setting can be at one of three values. These values are:

  • Home, or
  • School, or
  • Work

If you do not have any separate preferences set in either the General Preferences or the Einstein@Home Project Preferences, then this setting has no effect.

The setting for the computer is made on the "Computer Summary" { Icon, SAH web docs. } form.

[edit] "Edit Einstein@Home preferences" link

Clicking on this link will take you to the editing page were you can make changes to the settings of your Einstein@Home Project preferences. Most of these project settings actually pertain to the operation of the BOINC Manager running on your computer.

These project settings in almost all cases will pertain to the operation of the BOINC Manager running on your computer.

[edit] "Add Separate Einstein@Home Preferences for Home" link

[edit] "Add Separate Einstein@Home Preferences for School" link

[edit] "Add Separate Einstein@Home Preferences for Work" link

Clicking on any one of these links will allow you to make preference venues that can be used to change the operation of your computers that are grouped in each venue.

The three defined venues are "Home", "School", and "work"
