[edit] General

A specification that defines a means of connecting graphics cards to an computer system. The requirement for a separate bus to handle the "traffic" to the graphics cards was realized when these data transfers saturated the PCI bus. By making a separate bus for the graphics system the overall performance of the computer was enhanced significantly. As with the PCI bus, the AGP bus was extended and the speed increased to the current (well as of this writing) 8 'x' version indicating a performance that is supposed to be 8 times the speed of the original system.
