Example Account Creation Confirmation e-Mail
Example Account Creation Confirmation e-Mail

The general process whereby an Account is created for a BOINC Powered Project and the Account becomes usable. There is a general structure to this process, and it looks like this:

  1. You register yourself on a Project's Web Site by completing a form with the information that the Project desires or needs to qualify you to join the Project. In general, this will always require a valid a name (or alias, if you wish to hide your identity) and a valid e-Mail address as a minimum.
The information required by a Project to create an Account may be more than you wish to provide. In general, there will be some information that is mandatory and possibly some additional information that is optional. Most of the time the optional information is to assist the Project in understanding the general profile of the Participant. It is unlikely that there is a nefarious intention. If the information is an optional item, and your are uncomfortable with providing this information, then the best option is to simply not answer the question.
I cannot stop you, but if you lie by filling in bogus information then they will form an incorrect picture of their user base. And that does no one a good service. By leaving the item blank, well, maybe they will get the idea that they are being too intrusive. As an additional item, you can indicate to the project your feelings by using the available feedback mechanisms. Trust me, calm and rational feedback is listened to. Tirades, and personal attacks will, sad to say, not help at all. Ok, the soap-box is gone … Moving right along.
  2. The Project will send an e-Mail with an Account Key to the address you provided in the first form; like the one shown in the example here.
  3. You will have to complete another form with the Account Key provided in the e-Mail to finish the account activation.
The point to this is that if someone tries to set something up in your name, they can't just go to a Project's Web Site and create an Account in your name. To do so, they also have to have knowledge of your e-Mail address, so they can do the first part, but then they cannot complete the process because the completion also requires them to have access to the contents of your e-Mail account. And, you don't give out the pass words to your e-Mail account do you? I hope not …
Note:
The Account Key shown in the example e-Mail is not a valid Account Key and will not work with any BOINC Powered Project.
