[edit] Adding News items to The Unofficial BOINC Wiki! News

For the time being, and to get started, The Unofficial BOINC Wiki! News section is protected and only the website administrators can add news items (6th June 2009). This policy might change as time goes on depending on spam, vandalism and peoples views on the topic.

[edit] The News item naming convention

News items get posted to the News Archive section and they must follow a very specific naming convention so that they appear in the correct order in the News Archive. The naming convention is very simple, the first ever news item posted started with the number 9999. So each time someone posts a new news item, this number should count down.

As an example, the first ever news item contained this Category at the bottom of the news item;

<noinclude>

</noinclude>

So in the next news item posted, we counted down by one to 9998;

<noinclude>

</noinclude>

And the next new news item counted down by one to 9997;

<noinclude>

</noinclude>

So by keeping to this naming convention, new news items will always appear at the top of the News Archive page.

In addition, its also important that you add the <noinclude></noinclude> tags as part of the special category naming convention. These tags mean that the News Page itself is not included in the news on the front page of this website or in the RSS feed! Very important!

[edit] Adding your new news item

To add your new news item there are 6 steps to follow;

Step 1. First Edit the last posted news item to see what number news item it was. If it was News9997, then your new news item will be numbered News9996. Very simple to just copy and paste the category and tags from the last news item and subtract one from the number.

Step 2. Create a brand new wiki page and its title should be the title of your news item. Try to start the title of the news item with the date, this is just for people viewing the News Archive so they can see the date of each news item.

Example; 6th_June_2009-Unofficial_BOINC_Wiki_gets_new_hosting_plan

Step 3. Write the news content the same way you normally create a page in this wiki

Step 4. Add your new wiki news item Category number and <noinclude></noinclude> tags making sure that you edit the number so its one less than the previous news item Example;

<noinclude>

</noinclude>

Step 5. Save the page. This page will then appear in the News Archive

Step 6. Your not finished yet! To make each news item appear in the Latest News, you need to edit the Latest News page and add your new news item to the top of the page. This bit is simple, you just copy the last news item and replace the title with your news news item title. Then your finished!
