Archival Storage
From Unofficial BOINC Wiki
[edit] General
A place or classification of storage for material that needs to be retained but the speed of access does not have to be high. For example, records that the government desires or requires by law may have to be retained for decades. Having these records on-site consumes large amounts of local space. By sending the records off to a less accessible storage is not only cheaper, but keeps the offices cleaner.
In the context of the BOINC Client Software this is storage of Work Units and Results for possible later use. Because access speed is not a consideration, keeping them in high cost local storage does not make sense. So, the data can be stored, for example, on magnetic tape and not on high cost Disk Drives.
