BOINC FAQ: BOINC and Testing
From Unofficial BOINC Wiki
Contents |
[edit] General
This section of the FAQ addresses questions related to the testing of the BOINC Client Software. It is normally recommended that Participants run the latest production Version of the BOINC Client Software. The main exception is when a Beta Version addresses a specfic problem that is affecting a specific Participant.
[edit] I hate this version of the BOINC Software software, It seems like a Beta version to me, I'm quitting!
Quitting Due To Bad Version
We'd be sorry to lose you, but no one responds well to threats. The Developers develop, you run the application. That's the deal for all alpha and beta projects. And even though the BOINC Client Software is tested, we agree that there are times when things don't seem to work well. There are also even times when the Beta Version seems to be better than the released version.
Make sure that you only run the released versions of the software. The software that is in Beta Testing is in development, it is not intended to be run by most Participants. It is available if you want to be part of the testing process. As a consequence of your participation with the Alpha and Beta Versions, you have agreed to run software that is in development and is not ready for general release.
And, Oh by the way, most people that threaten to leave don't ever seem to actually carry out the threat.
[edit] I want to make sure that I am running the latest and greatest version, should I use the BOINC Beta?
Running Beta Version
There are several IFs involved in running Beta Versions of any software.
- If you can clearly and dispassionately report bugs.
- If you don't mind potential instability problems.
- If you won't mind reloading the software several times a week.
- If you don't mind the loss of work.
- If you don't mind the potential need to reinstall your operating system.
- If you are brave and resourceful.
- If you won't complain if there is a problem with the software.
If you do not have a problem with any of these items then, by all means, and with our blessings, install the Beta Version of the software.
For most Participants the best version of the BOINC Client Software is available as a released or stable Version. We do want you to have the best version of software and the beta version is a test version.
If you do join the ranks of the Beta testers, welcome, try the software. Try it at your own risk.
Report errors to the development teams and suggest improvements. If you want serious consideration of your input you have to do that in a calm reasoned manner.
Whines, gripes, foul language, name calling, flames, rants, tirades, accusations, and all other types of emotional reactions will probably not help you get recognition of the value of your input. And may cause valuable insights to be overlooked.
