BOINC FAQ: Updates to the BOINC Software

In this FAQ section we will talk about updates of the BOINC Client Software, and also the BOINC Server Software.

[edit] Why am I seeing several Science Applications for one project?
There are several reasons for more Science Applications than you might expect. Different Versions may be required by different Work Units, Compound Applications, and controling applications are some of the most common.

[edit] There is an update to the BOINC Client Software. Do I have to install it?
Not always. Most Projects will run with a range of different Versions. There is minimum Version setting for all Projects however so eventually older Versions of the BOINC Client Software will no longer work.

[edit] I still have Work Units in my buffer. What is going to happen to them because of the updated Science application?
In most cases the Work Units in the Work Buffer will be found and processed by the new Version of the BOINC Client Software.

[edit] How does one upgrade to newer version of the BOINC Client Software? Will it install over top of old version keeping all work? Or does one have to finish work, detach, un-install and reinstall sect. etc. ...
Normally installing a new Version will leave all work intact and there is little reason to finish, detach or backup. In most cases it is not even required that you uninstall first, it is always recomended though. When crossing Version number 4.20 uninstalling is required.
- Climateprediction.net is a special case. With the long Work Units and Climateprediction.net's Servers being more forgiving of returning backed up work than most Projects it is recomended that you back up before installing a new Version (see Saving the Contents of the BOINC Directory - Microsoft Windows®).
