BOINC Powered Backup Project

[edit] General
A BOINC Powered Backup Project is a BOINC Powered Project that is not normally expected to run, but only expected to run when the primary Project is not supplying Work Units.
[edit] Version Information
- BOINC Client Software Version 4.45 or later is required for a Participant setting up a BOINC Powered Backup Project. Earlier Versions will not recognize the Deadlines and trying to use a BOINC Powered Backup Project with them is a waste of CPU time.
- BOINC Powered Backup Projects have problems with some Versions of the BOINC Server Software earlier than 4.70. In these cases the BOINC Powered Backup Project can get into an Exponential Back-Off state just before a Work Unit is needed from that Project. This can cause a period when there is no work on the Host.
[edit] Set Up
The BOINC Powered Backup Project should be assigned a very low Resource Share. Assuming a normal Project has a Resource Share of 100, a Resource Share of 0.1 or 0.01 is recommended for the BOINC Powered Backup Project. Go to your Project Preferences to set this. More extreme differences in Resource Share will work. However this should be enough for the desired effect.
[edit] Expected Behavior
The BOINC Powered Backup Project will download and complete one or a few Work Units initially. After that the BOINC Powered Backup Project will generally only get Work Units when the primary Project is unable to supply Work Units, and very rarely at other times. The BOINC Powered Backup Project will cause Earliest Deadline First mode when it's Deadline approaches, since it gets very little CPU time under Round-Robin Scheduling.
[edit] Project Suitability
Some Projects are better suited to being a BOINC Powered Backup Project than others. General things to look for:
- Projects that are unlikely to have problems at the same time. Two Projects based at the same location will most likely have the same network and power problems and be unavailable at the same times.
- Projects that have very long processing times per Work Unit generally do not work well as a BOINC Powered Backup Project. When the Deadline approaches they will dominate the Host for an unacceptably long period.
- Projects with short or tight Deadlines can work well as a BOINC Powered Backup Project but may not appeal to all Participants. They will most likely spend more time in Earliest Deadline First mode than Projects with looser Deadlines.
- The most important thing to consider is how you feel about a Project.
| Project | Project Web Site | Suitability as a Backup Project | Resoning or Comments |
|---|---|---|---|
| Climateprediction.net | Climateprediction.net Web Site | Poor | The extremely long processing times make this project unsuitable for a BOINC Powered Backup Project. |
| Einstein@Home | Einstein@Home Web Site | Average | The Deadlines have been increased to 14 days. However the large download file is still a negative. |
| LHC@Home | LHC@Home Web Site | Average | When this Project has work it is a good to excellent BOINC Powered Backup Project, since it tends to have work intermittantly it gets dropped down to average. |
| MalariaControl.net | Africa@Home Web Site | Poor | Short Result Deadlines reduce the suitability of this Project for use as a BOINC Powered Backup Project. |
| Predictor@Home | Predictor@Home Web Site | Poor | The short processing times combined with reasonably loose Result Deadlines make this a suitable BOINC Powered Backup Project. However recent prolems there have reduced the suitablity of this Project |
| Rosetta@Home | Rosetta@Home Web Site | Excelent | Participant settable processing times and reasonably loose Result Deadlines make this a suitable BOINC Powered Backup Project. If attached only for a BOINC Powered Backup Project and your local connection is up to the bandwidth requirements set the processing time to a low value. |
| SETI@Home | SETI@Home Web Site | Good | Reasonable processing times and reasonably loose Result Deadlines make this a suitable BOINC Powered Backup Project. |
| SIMAP@Home | SIMAP@Home Web Site | Good | Low processing times make this a suitable BOINC Powered Backup Project though the 10 day Result Deadline may be a little short for some Participants. |
| World Community Grid | World Community Grid Web Site | Good | Reasonably loose Result Deadlines make this a suitable BOINC Powered Backup Project. |
