BOINC Screensaver Set-Up

[edit] General
The BOINC Screensaver will generate a graphical display on your computer monitor just like the old SETI@Home Classic application. The advantage with the BOINC Client Software is that you can be participating in more than one Project and can have vastly different displays as you process work for the various Projects.
If the project does not have a graphics generation component in the Science Application the BOINC Daemon will display a bouncing BOINC Logo on your display.
Settings for the screensaver graphics are available, if there are any, on the Project's Web Site.
- Note:
- Some of the standard windows screensavers, particularly the ones with '3D' in the name, can cause the computer to hang when running any distributed computing project.
[edit] Microsoft Windows®
The BOINC Screensaver is installed as part of the normal BOINC Client Software install process for the Microsoft Windows® systems. To enable the screensaver for your system you have to do the following:
- Right-click on the desktop.
- Select the "Properties" menu option.
- Click on the tab labeled "Screen Saver"
- In the "Screen saver" box (immediately under the picture of the monitor) select the "down arrow" to expand the list
- Select "BOINC" from the list. (If not found, a copy needs to be obtained from the BOINC program directory. The file is called BOINC.scr.
- Click on the "Settings" and uncheck or check (you decide) the box labeled "Go to blank screen"
Obviously here this is a matter for personal preferences, if the box is un-checked you will not go to a blank screen. If it is checked, then it will after the time delay. - Now, regardless of the setting of the check box, make sure that there is a time number that is not zero.
For some reason, windows can go immediately blank with no screen saver even if the box is unchecked and the time is "0". - Click "Ok".
- Enter a time number in the field labeled "Wait x Minutes"
- Check or clear the "On resume" check box.
If you do not want people to have access to your machine (like at the office) then I would have this checked so they cannot get into my system.
At home, you may want to leave this box clear. - Click "Ok" to save the changes.
- If the requirement is to only let BOINC process during Screen saver time, it is important to also set the 'idle resume' time of the BOINC core client (daemon) to a period shorter than the delay time of the Screen saver, e.g. T minus 1 minute (time as set under point 9.). The options in the host profile would than be "Do work while computer is in use? No" and "Do work only after computer is idle for X minutes.
Note: This nasty bug causes the "On Resume" feature to be broken. You must leave the "On Resume" checkbox cleared.
