Back-End Server

[edit] General
A Back-End Server is a Server that usually does not have direct connections to the outside world, external processes, users, Participants, etc. The primary "customer" of the back-end server's services is another server which in turn may be another back-end server or a front-end server. For example, a Web Server would be considered to be a Front-End server because of its direct connections to the Internet and the services provided are provided to external users.
This is not a "clear-cut" distinction. But it is simply a categorization of the roles played by the server and defines its primary purpose in delivering services within the system.
In the case of the BOINC System, there are a number of processes that have to be completed and these processes are gathered into programs that are part of the back-end processing.
