Back-End System

[edit] General

A computer system that operates without direct connections to the Participants and users of the services that are provided by the Back-End System. For example, in the delivery of Web Pages from a Web Server system, the Web Server is all that is "seen" by the Participant that connects to the Web Site. For dynamic pages and for other services the Web Server might connect to a Database Server. The database system provides information that is rendered by the Web Server but has no direct connection to the Participant that is looking at the web pages.

In the case of the BOINC System this is part of the architecture. Much of the information that is flowing between the Participant and the BOINC System is stored within the BOINC Database. But none of the Participants can directly connect to the database system. One of the reasons for this type of architecture is that security is enhanced because more restrictions can be placed on the connection from the Web Server to the database server.
