An award for completing a milestone in the accumulation of credit. In the SETI@Home Classic the awards were for the completion of a certain number of Work Units.
Awards were given at the following numbers of Work Units processed:
- 100
- 250
- 500
- 750
- 1,000
- 2,500
- 5,000
- 7,500
- 10,000
- 25,000
- 50,000
Depressingly enough, I just passed 50,000 Work Units when the BOINC Beta Test was making great progress, so it does not look like I will see an higher badge (also called User Certificates).
With the BOINC Client Software the way that badges may be earned and how they are to be used is a little up in the air, and even after the first few applications go "live" I would expect that it will be a year or so until this "shakes-out". My speculation is that there will be hobby sites that will collect the statistics and they will set the standard. This is especially true in the sense that the BOINC System is intended to not only be a distributed computing environment, but is also a multiple project system. Only time will tell how all of this will work out (heck, I don't even know if there is a gym nearby).
