Benchmarking
From Unofficial BOINC Wiki
[edit] General
A process where a program called a Benchmark is run on one or more computers (specific machines or systems or classes of machines and systems) to establish performance characteristics of those computers. In BOINC, the Benchmark is run to establish the processing characteristics of the Participant's Computer which will enable the calculation of appropriate claims for Credit.
In BOINC, the Benchmark numbers are Double Precision Numbers (this enables the use of very large numbers with high precision) and the value is rounded when displayed. In practical terms what this means is that that there may be small variations in the displayed values if the Benchmark is run several times in succession. The internal value is more precise and you will not be cheated, it just means that your current performance level is at one of those points where it may seem to be going up and down because of the effects of the rounding.
