Beta Test

[edit] General

A stage in the development where the software has been passing internal and integration tests and has proved fairly reliable in the Alpha Test. However, the software is still unfinished but all of its planned features should be in the code and the software is normally stable. The purpose of the beta testing is to expose the software to a normal production environment in the hopes that more of the subtle problems will be revealed and can then be tracked down and eliminated. This stage succeeds the Alpha Test.

During the Beta Tests the software may undergo rebuilds but these are usually fairly few in number (usually 3 or 4) and will require moderate care to ensure a successful installation. This stage is normally the first point at which a broad cross-section of the user community outside of the organization that is developing the software gets a chance to give the software a "test drive".
