A detectable object in the universe that has certain properties chief among them the fact that the escape velocity is higher than the speed of light. That means that once something passes the Event Horizon it cannot escape again.
An object whose gravitational pull is so strong that anything that is within a certain distance of it cannot escape, not even light. The primary theory is that Black Holes are the result of the collapse of certain very massive stars at the ends of their lives. There is the possibility that there are very massive Black Holes that may exist in the cores of large galaxies and may have many times the mass of a "normal" Black Hole.
