[edit] Table of size of all the downloads and uploads

Table of Size of all the downloads and uploads
Item Size Frequency
BOINC Download 6MB Once per BOINC upgrade
Climateprediction Application 15Mb Once every model but only if there has been an upgrade
Climateprediction Model 10K Once per Model
Trickle 91 bytes 72 times per model
Mega or GM Trickle (for graphs) 169 bytes Once per phase
Science upload 7MB Once per Model

That is too much detail, give me a total

If you upgrade BOINC 3 times a year, the project upgrades science application 3 times a year and you are running a reasonably fast processor which does 2.2 Second per Timestep, then total uploads and downloads are:

(6MB * 3) + (15MB * 3) + 18.4models * (10K + 91b * 72 + 169b * 3 + 7MB) = 192MB per annum

So, the average is under 16MB per month. That is fairly low for a BOINC project.

[edit] Time to complete

Here's some rough performance numbers for a reasonably quick P4, using 1 logical cpu:

  • Timestep = 2.2 Seconds
  • Trickle = 6.6 Hours
  • Model year = 10.6 Hours
  • Phase = 6.6 Days
  • Model = 19.8 Days

[edit] Size on Hard Disk

Why is 330MB left on my disk?

[edit] Climateprediction.net Cell Sizes

  • Climateprediction.net Cells are 3.75 latitude by 2.5 latitude in the standard experiment. They will obviously be smaller in the High Resolution model. Therefore these cells vary in size depending upon latitude. Area of Cell at equator is 45,000 square miles. At the latitude of London 53 degrees, cells are 27,000 square miles and so UK is largely covered by 4 cells. There are 19 layers
  • Data stored at corners giving data grid of 96 by 73 = 7008 data points per layer or 133152 in total.
