[edit] General

A version of a program that does not have any Graphical User Interface (GUI). All of the interaction with the program is done in a session, called a terminal session, where the user manipulates the program using textual commands entered on the terminal. In the PC world, the terminal sessions are a thing of the past in that most all computers come with a fancy-dan GUI, but there are many operations that are more efficiently carried out using a non-graphical interface. The programs are much smaller and in many cases faster that the identical GUI versions.

Another place where a command line program finds a home is on servers where the User is usually a System Administrator and has a higher level of ability and does not find a command line program out of the ordinary. The reason that these programs find this niche and fill it so well is that many, if not all, of the servers normal behaviors is performed with no one in attendance. Error recovery mechanisms are in place if bad things happen.
