A high-technology device that makes people grumpy and converts money into heat. Obsolete before your car leaves the parking lot, the computer of today cannot be used with the software of the day after tomorrow. On one rare occasion I actually had a computer that was not actually rendered obsolete by a replacement because there was none. This device is rumored to be able to make life better for people by letting them attempt to recover the 200 hours of work that was lost due to a software "feature" not documented in the owner's guide (if one is even included at all).

Computers were originally designed to handle large amounts of mathematical calculation that would be tedious if done by pencil and paper. Over a period of years, however, it became customary to use computers for more mundane day-to-day tasks, such as writing, with the result described above. With BOINC, however, computers are again being used for the purpose for which they were originally designed.
