Cruncher
From Unofficial BOINC Wiki
[edit] General
A "Cruncher" is a Participant in one or more BOINC Powered Projects that not only wants to perform the science but he or she also has an avid interest in comparing their productivity with other Participants.
A "Cruncher" will typically do things to maximize their ability to process Work Units. Since the Screen Saver can and does increase the time it takes to process a Work Unit, they would run a version of the program that did not "waste" time on the eye candy of the Screen Saver.
Some would buy new computers and keep the old ones around just doing SETI@Home processing. I can personally attest to this one, because for many years this was what I did much to the annoyance of my spouse. At my peak I had 11 computers with 10 of them being Intel/AMD based units with a speed range from 1.4 to 3.0 GHz (AMD rated numbers would be 1400 to 3000), and a Macintosh with Dual G5 processors running at 2.0 MHz. This "Farm" gave me a capability to process about 600 to 650 Work Units a week.
