[edit] General

A Domain Name Server is a member of the Domain Name System.

A Domain Name Server is a Service running on a Server. This Service performs translations between human readable names and IP Addresses (the process is reversable). It allows users to use simple, memorable names to identify a Server, and the Domain Name Server (using other Domain Name Servers in the Domain Name System) will attempt to look-up the IP Address for the requested name.

For further details on the process, see Domain Name System.
