From Unofficial BOINC Wiki
Contents |
[edit] General
This guide is based on Microsoft Windows® XP. However, it should work with all Versions of Microsoft Windows® 2000 and later.
[edit] Preconditions
In order to complete the procedure outlined in this guide, you must meet the following preconditions:
- You must have an operational computer.
- You must have successfully intalled the BOINC Client Software as a "Service Type" installation.
[edit] Explanation
On this page we'll walk you through on how you can get your graphics and Screensaver working, after you installed the BOINC Client Software as a service. This will allow the BOINC Daemon to interact with the desktop under the "Local System" account.
Under normal circumstances, when you install the BOINC Client Software as a service, you do not have graphics or the Screensaver. But with a little tweaking of the service, this can be fixed. Please note that there are security concerns related to this method. The "Local System" account has many privileges that not even "Administrator" has. So, for more secure crunching, BOINC shouldn't be run under the "Local System" account.
[edit] Enable "Service" Type Install Graphics Capability
On the Microsoft Windows® Taskbar, click on "Start".
In the pop-up menu, click on "Run...".
In the dialog, type services.msc, then click on "Ok" or depress the "Enter/Return" on the keyboard.
[edit] Open BOINC Properties
In the dialog window, in the "Name" column, find the "BOINC" entry and double-click it.
[edit] Changing the setting
Then click on the "Log On" tab.
[edit] Changing the setting
At present the service is set to your account only, but you want it to be able to interact with the desktop. To do so:
Click on the "Local System Account" radio button put a green "dot" in it.
If there is not a "check-mark" in the "Allow service to interact with desktop" check-box, click on the check-box to add one.
Click the "Apply" button.
[edit] Warning Dialog
You will get this warning message in a popup screen. Just click "OK".
[edit] Stop the Service
Double-click on the "BOINC" entry in the services list. In the window that opens, click the "Stop" button.
[edit] Stopping the BOINC Daemon (Service)
This will show a progress dialog as Windows® attempts to stop the service, showing elapsed time with a progress bar.
[edit] Restarting
Next you click the "Start" button, where you will get a new progress bar and the BOINC Daemon (service) restarts. Click "OK" to finish.
Close the "Services" dialog by using the "File Menu/Exit Option" or the "Close" icon (red "X") for the window.
[edit] Testing The Graphics
Open up the BOINC Manager, go to the Work Tab, click once on the a Work Unit that is running, then press the "Show graphics" button on the "Tasks Panel". Sit back and marvel at the graphics showing up.
You can now also easily set up the Screensaver.
Right-click anywhere on an empty space on the Windows desktop, in the drop down menu go to "Properties". In the display properties window that opens, go to the "Screen Saver" Tab, once there, from the drop down menu choose BOINC as your Screensaver. Set it up. Then just wait.
