Error Correcting Code

A mechanism for detecting communication errors that change the information content of messages passed between two computing devices. Some of the more sophisticated mechanisms possible guarantee positive identification of all error conditions, including those that distort the information in both the data and the error correcting code itself.
In current usage the term Error Correcting Code is used for both the detection and the correcting mechanisms. In other words, to be precise, we have Error Detecting Code and Error Correcting Code. The first allows the detection of errors, the second enables the correction of errors discovered.
