Often abbreviated as GUI, a Graphical User Interface is a interface mechanism that provides the user with a system of windows allowing input through the mouse and keyboard and in general insulating the user from as much of the computer system's internals as possible. Many consider this a significant advance on the technology, while others (like myself) regret the fact that many operations formerly possible under older interface technologies are no longer possible with the GUI.
