Guide to Using Wireshark

From Unofficial BOINC Wiki

This is a placeholder for a future guide to using Ethereal to view/analyse what's going on at the network level during BOINC communication (either between the client and the project servers, or between the client and the manager).

There will be information about basic settings to only capture the info you need, as well as a "quick start" guide to getting ethereal up and running, with various tweaks (like settings a default network adaptor to use).

Later I'll be including more advanced tips and techniques, such as more complex display filters that i've writen to pick out BOINC client communication from the background HTTP data (all the Web Site traffic you've generated while browsing, you know where you were browsing, you don't need to see that if you're only interested in BOINC traffic, but by all means have a play with it on your own to see what your browser is sending/recieving, for this, a general purpose "http.request or http.response" (without the quotes) display filter will do nicely, this will show any HTTP data from any browser (or anything that accesses the web))

For the really adventurous i'll be covering, in detail, how you can use Ethereal to troubleshoot network communications, download errors and many other problems (like not being able to connect to a remote client with the manger or BoincView)
