Hindcast
From Unofficial BOINC Wiki
[edit] General
A Hindcast is where a climate model is run for a past period of time with actual (or as near as known) Forcings and realistic starting conditions. This allows researchers to see how well that model performs. A Hindcast is being run as part of the Transient Coupled Model.
The Forecast is what is wanted but the Hindcast is needed to assess how good the Forecast is likely to be.
