The amount of time that the Central Processing Unit (CPU) is not performing any useful work. Most computers, especially Personal Computers, spend an enormous amount of time doing, quite literally, nothing. The ingenious part of the SETI@Home Classic application was to allow the Participants to "donate" that idle time to scientific research.
