The "Notification Area"
The "Notification Area"

A section of the Taskbar of a Microsoft Windows® Operating System's display. This area is intended to facilitate the observation of programs that are active but at the current time are not open as a window in the foreground.

Programs that have icons here in this section of the Taskbar are there for rapid access the application itself. Most of the time the programs shown here as an icon are part of the system that may require fairly continuous interaction. Examples are programs like the sound system's volume control, the BOINC Client Software (of course), instant messaging programs, etc.
