[edit] General

  1. A state, or condition, where the system is not available to perform work, and if work is available, that work is not being processed. In other words, if it is not working and not doing work, when work is available, it is "Off-Line".
  2. A simpler way of saying it is that "it" (whatever "it" it is that we are talking about) is broken.
  3. We also use this term in the sense of BOINC Powered Projects to mean that the Participant is not connected to the Internet.
  4. The system, or systems, are not directly connected to any other system. This does not mean that the system itself is Off-Line and not functioning. It simply means that access to the system is restricted in some way. One of the more common systems that might be considered to be "Off-Line" would be an Off-Line Science Database where access to the data is restricted to researchers and not the Participants that are supporting the Project. In this case the system is Off-Line as far as the Participant might be concerned and On-Line to any researcher within the Project.
