[edit] General

This term is a definition of a set or policies, practices, methods, and licensing terms identifying a specific type of software development. In very general terms it means that the user of the software has full visibility of all of the originating code and is thereby better able to use the software in the solution of a problem.

The production of software using Open Source does not immediately demonstrate that the software has any higher level of "goodness" or quality over any other set of mechanisms (commonly known as Closed Source).

For a complete definition see The Open Source Definition.
