This is a term referring to a combination of hardware and software components that enable some form of computing to be performed.

In the case of the BOINC System the term means a computer type (hardware) and Operating System (software) upon which the BOINC Client Software is run. Typical platforms include:

  • Apple Macintosh PowerMac with OS-X version 10.3 or later
  • Dell Precision 670 running Windows XP Pro
  • Generic "WinTel" running Linux
  • Sun workstation running Solaris

Each Platform supported by a BOINC Powered Project requires an entry in that Project's BOINC Database in the Platform Table.
