Program Download Failure

[edit] Description/General

When the Science Application programs are upgraded, BOINC should automatically look after downloading any new application programs. If there is a temporary failure to download the program but the Work Unit is downloaded, the Work Unit can crash. This would not be much of a problem if BOINC could recover correctly and have another go. Unfortunately, it is possible for BOINC to leave the files open in a way that causes future attempts to fail.

[edit] Version Information

[edit] Found in version

All AFAIK.

Version 5.x may be better than Version 4.x.

[edit] Fixed in version

No fix yet AFAIK

Unclear about Version 5 Update me

[edit] Affected Projects

  • All. However some project may be more vunerable than others. Climateprediction.net has large program and very small Work Units only 10K so may be more susceptible than others.

[edit] Detection

No Work Unit will download and start running. Depending upon when you catch the problem, you could see some of these types of messages:

Problem starts with temporarily failed download of program files.

2005-07-23 14:36:44 [climateprediction.net] Started download of hadsm3_4.13_windows_intelx86.exe
2005-07-23 14:36:44 [climateprediction.net] Started download of hadsm3data_4.13_windows_intelx86.zip
2005-07-23 14:46:47 [climateprediction.net] Temporarily failed download of hadsm3_4.13_windows_intelx86.exe: -182

leading to unrecoverable errors.

2005-07-23 14:47:48 [climateprediction.net] Unrecoverable error for result 129e_100070105_1 (app_version download error: couldn't get input files:
file_xfer_error

you may get a lot of these "createProcess() failed"

2005-07-24 02:40:54 [climateprediction.net] CreateProcess() failed - The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. (0x20)
2005-07-24 02:40:55 [climateprediction.net] CreateProcess() failed - The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. (0x20)

a reset could give: (Note: Do not reset a project if there are running Work Units.)

2005-07-24 10:08:16 [climateprediction.net] Couldn't delete file projects/climateprediction.net/hadsm3_4.13_windows_intelx86.exe

If you have had a few models fail, you could get

24/07/2005 20:52:44|climateprediction.net|Message from server: No work sent
24/07/2005 20:52:44|climateprediction.net|Message from server: (reached daily quota of 2 results)

[edit] Actions

[edit] Corrective Actions

Simple solution

Exit BOINC and restart it

If you have already reached your quota, you will have to wait for the next day for it to make another attempt to download the programs.

More complex solution

If you don't want to run the risk of the next attempt also failing (or you tried the simple solution and it didn't work).

1. Exit BOINC.

2. Download the program files. If the programs are for Climateprediction Hadsm3 v4.13 for Windows, they can be accessed from Arnaud's link in this thread.

3. Place these files in the project folder eg www.climateprediction.net , and

4. Restart BOINC

Note:

Whenever you download files from the internet and run them, you are taking a risk. Arnaud has been around for a long time on the Climateprediction.net forums and I would trust them to be OK but that is just my opinion and not any sort of guarantee.

[edit] Preventive actions

Perhaps reboot PC from time to time.
