Data Server

A Server that performs operations on and manages data that is not necessarily stored in a database resident on the Server. The data content may be structured in SQL, files, etc. and is usually served thorough the Data Server because of specific project needs.

The way we usually consider a Data Server in the context of the BOINC System is as the portion of the system that provides data to the Participant's Computers in the form of a Work Unit, more specifically the Work Unit Data File that can be processed and returned to the Data Server as a Result Data File. The Data Server may be hosted on either the Database Server, the Web Server, a local File Server, or on a separate machine with the custom applications to convert raw project input data into smaller Work Units and to issue them to and receive Results from the Project's Participants.

  • This is nothing more than a possessive form of the term, obviously meaning that the specific Data Server that belongs to the Project which may be expressly named or implied by the context of the sentence.
