[edit] General

A high-end computer, which we call a "server", that supports the BOINC Powered Project in the performance of the Science Application that is being run on the Participant's computer. This is a generic name for any one of the servers required to support the BOINC Powered Project.

BOINC is a typical Distributed Computing system with the BOINC System Architecture being a complex of software and hardware that enables the issue of Work Units and the collection of the Results processed on computers provided by a Participants. The server-side of this architecture can be provided on one or more physical servers.

Conceptually, it is always easier to understand the architecture as a collection of "logical" servers. These servers perform a specific task and include:

These "logical" servers can be provided on one or more physical machines. For example, all of these logical servers might be located on one physical machine for a small BOINC Project. For larger projects, each of the logical servers might reside on a dedicated machine to increase performance. On very large projects, there may be more than one physical machine hosting the logical server component because the demand is greater than can be supported by one single machine.
