Really Simple Syndication
From Unofficial BOINC Wiki
[edit] General
Really Simple Syndication (RSS) is a mechanism and / or protocol that uses a form of a XML data format that is designed for sharing headlines and other World Wide Web content. It is a way to get rapid and continuous updates as a "What's New" bulletin for the Project's Web Site.
The original protocol was developed by UserLand in 1997 and subsequently used by Netscape to fill channels for their Netcenter. The Really Simple Syndication protocol and mechanism has evolved into a popular means of sharing content between sites and their interested participants (users). The Really Simple Syndication protocol solves some of the myriad problems the web site managers commonly face, including the desire for increasing traffic, mitigating some of the additional burden of this increased traffic, but primarily the need to gather and distribute news. Use of the Really Simple Syndication protocol can also be the basis for additional content distribution.
Kind of a relief for those those people that want to be instantly made aware of events. Me? I can wait till it comes out in paperback …
