This is the mechanism that the BOINC Client Software uses to communicate with the Scheduling Server and the Data Server.
All this means that one computer "calls" another computer and asks for that computer to perform a function on behalf of the caller. It is just like you calling your spouse and asking them to get milk on the way home.
