Result Data File
From Unofficial BOINC Wiki
[edit] General
This is the actual outcome data that was generated based on the processing performed on a Result by a Project specific Science Application that performs the actual operations on the input Work Unit Data File. It is sent to Hosts as an empty file with dependancies on input files and Science Applications.
Just as the Work Unit will vary in size from small (2 to 5 Kilo-Bytes), to large (several Mega-Bytes), and even larger to very large (possibly Giga-Bytes) you, the Participant, will know the anticipated size of the Result Data Files before joining a Project.
A minor, but important point is that there is a difference between the Result Data Files and the actual Result reported to the Project because the Result Data File goes to the Project's Data Server and the Result goes to the Project's Scheduling Server, where, if it is eligible in the Quorum of Results after Validation, the Participant may be granted Credit.
In some cases, the Climateprediction.net Project being one of them, there may be two kinds of Result Data Files; one that is returned to the Project with summary data and other files that are left on the Participant's Computer in case the Project needs them returned.
Because of this, the Participant may see a slow accumulation of Result Data Files on their computer and this may become a problem. We have a BOINC "How-To" Guide, "Saving Or Deleting CPDN Result Data Files" that contains a procedure for archiving and removing these files.
