[edit] General

The Screensaver and graphics module for the Climateprediction.net project delivers this stunning view of the Earth with the developing weather patterns as calculated by the model.

You can look at different aspects of the model by using certain keys to change the displayed data. In a nutshell, you can look at the model's calculated results for:

  • Temperature
  • Precipitation
  • Pressure
  • Cloud Cover - Block Gradient
  • Cloud Cover - Smooth Gradient

For some of the displayed data you can change the output display to show or hide features that you do not wish to see.

Unfortunately, you cannot make the changes while it is a screen saver as the key-press will cause the screen saver to turn off.

The source explanation of the displays, and the data within those displays, was from the CPDN forum sticky.

The summary list of the letters that will cause changes in the data displayed are as follows:

  • H = Help
  • T = Temperature View
  • P = Pressure View
  • R = Rainfall (really Precipitation View (but P taken))
  • S = Smoothed Cloud View
  • U = Unsmoothed Cloud View (model grid-boxes)
  • A = Auto-rotate
  • D = Stop rotation
  • M = Toggle Metric / Imperial scale
  • F = Filter ("smooth") grid boxes
  • B = Headlight
  • X = Physical relief
  • Z = Rotate clockwise

Some old model may have different uses for some of these keys:

  • 0 = Toggles the starfield on and off
  • 1 = Toggles Snow on/off
  • 2 = Toggles Lo(w) Clouds on/off
  • 3 = Toggles Mid Clouds on/off
  • 4 = Toggles Hi(gh) Clouds on/off
  • 5 = Shows all
  • 6 = Toggles credits
  • 7 = Political boundaries in red
  • 8 = Timesteps to next Checkpoint
  • 9 = Toggles actual cell display/polygon estimate display

New to recent models:

  • W = shows whole globe as a temp map

Also, you can left-click & drag on the globe to move it's position around.

You can even "spin" the globe by left-clicking, holding the mouse button down, moving the mouse to the right (or left, depending on where you're starting from) and releasing the mouse button as you move your mouse...

Ctrl + left click + mouse up (or left) - zoom in Ctrl + left click + mouse down (or right) - zoom out

You have to be zoomed out to read the following text displays

  • C = Toggles country names
  • V = Toggles capital city names
  • I = Toggles area of country
  • L = Toggles longitude and latitude

[edit] Stand alone Visualisations

There are also other visualisation programs to look at your model in more depth and/or to compare what your model is doing now compared with previous periods or other models. For more detail see Stand alone Visualisation Packages.
