A Server is a computing device that performs a service for another computing device. Servers can be classified in several ways but the most common classification we use is to name a Server on the basis of the computing task that the server is primarily performing.

A common classification of servers includes:

• Database Server
• Domain Name Server
• File Server
• FTP Server
• Web Server

In the BOINC System the Servers are classified by their role in the system as a whole. This means we track the Server, not by what machine it is on, but by what it does in the system. With this, we may have more than one "Server" running on the same physical server hardware.
