[edit] General

Things seem to be moving at climateprediction.net towards outsourcing the FAQ and getting started pages to the wiki. At least so far there has been a surprising amount of agreement. I hope it turns into action. Update: Dave Frame has already reported that he has already started fiddling with photoshop mock-ups.

Anyway, this has got me thinking about the standard BOINC web pages which has a getting started link to a UCB page. I think it would be much better if the home page linked to another page that said:

This page has been outsourced to the unofficial BOINC Wiki. This enables you to look up more details of any jargon used. It also allows further documentation to grow and be responsive without a large effort by the project team. However as a consequence, this project does not accept any responsibility for the content which can be edited by a restricted set of enthusiasts.
BOINC Wiki: Getting Started Guide Link

I asked Paul if he wanted me to contact Dr Anderson to inform him of the direction CPDN seems to be taking and suggest this change to the standard BOINC web pages. The answer in general terms was that he thought it would be a good idea to try again.

It is disappointing that the concept has failed to make progress. Now I may only have heard part of one side of the disagreement but from that I seem to be gathering that control was the important issue. It is usually sensible to hear both sides of an argument before making up your mind on an issue. However, I think wikipedia rules work suprisingly well. Wikipedia is not a democracy - but some things are decided by votes. I believe that those people who spend most time editting a wiki are the people best placed to make decisions and these are the people who vote. It seems to work remarkable well.

There is no point in proposing this sort of thing before seeing how well it works. Therefore I thought I would put up a few matters to vote upon before seeing if this might be a viable way forward for the Wiki to be transferred to UCB but have control rest with a wikiocracy. [edit] Who should control the Wiki?

Paul should not consider giving up any control

Hosting by UCB but control by wikiocracy is best

  1. crandles 07:20, 5 January 2006 (EST) (I have already said I want to hear both sides of the argument and may change my vote.)
  2. --Paul D. Buck 07:55, 5 January 2006 (EST) {Edit: I have no particular objection to a single point of control, but there has to be some sort of appeal process to prevent dictatorial actions hindering the real point of this, I had suggested an editorial "board" with some or all Project Managers being members; even Paul could/can be a hindrance if unchecked ... :)}
  3. --JKeck 08:04, 5 January 2006 (EST) (control by wikiocracy is best, with limited numbers of editors/sysops, not sure where the server should be though) (this sounds alot like how it is now)
  4. --Rytis 11:12, 5 January 2006 (EST)
  5. Kinhull 11:40, 5 January 2006 (EST)

Hosting by UCB and control by Dr Anderson would be best

[edit] Main Title

Remove unofficial from the title Making it just "BOINC wiki"

  1. --JKeck 08:04, 5 January 2006 (EST)
  2. --crandles 09:06, 5 January 2006 (EST) Yespossibly if some progress made at CPDN or as a result of this or other compromise found
  3. .

BOINC Approved Dave Frame of CPDN has suggested this as "a tag that doesn't quite make UCB legally responsible for the content, but nevertheless confers a degree of authority"

Would this be acceptable?

Main title = 'BOINC Wiki' with a BOINC approved tag

  1. --crandles 09:45, 5 January 2006 (EST) If all parties find it acceptable
  2. --Rytis 11:12, 5 January 2006 (EST)
  3. Kinhull 11:49, 5 January 2006 (EST) (so long as UCB have their own official people who are also part of the wikiocracy)
  4. --Paul D. Buck 15:35, 6 January 2006 (EST)
  5. Honza 19:55, 8 January 2006 (EST)
