[edit] General

Message Type: Error Message

This Message means that the BOINC Client Software, Science Application, or Operating System encountered a severe error. It should be noted that these errors may not indicate a specific problem with the software, but may be the result of a confluence of stray interactions that produces, um, a negative effect.

These messages are called "Stop" messages for Microsoft Windows®. The messages and common ways to determine what and why these error are happening are in a Microsoft Knowledge Base Article.

Common causes of these errors can be:

These errors have been sighted in all BOINC Powered Projects, so, the examples are merely typical occurrences.

Note:
Even though the "death" seems to point to one application or another, there is no telling from this message where the error really occurred. The error usually points at the Science Application but may well be something like a device driver.

[edit] Things to Check

You should report your problem to the appropriate board for each of the projects as you may get better help there.

Also you could check various hardware related issues like:

  1. Is your system stable? (see How-To Test Machine Stability)
  2. Is your CPU cooling up to the job?
  3. Is there adequate ventilation inside your case?
  4. Have you checked all fans and cleaned the inside to remove dust buildup? (see How-To Do Basic Hardware Maintenance)
  5. Is the ambient temperature of the room too high?
  6. Can you setup a motherboard monitoring program to look at temperature fluctuations?
  7. Can you swap memory sticks and see if the problem goes away?
  8. Are you "overclocking" at all?

[edit] Exit Code -1073741819 (0xc0000005))

This is occurring a lot on Phase changes in Climateprediction.net. Often occurs after the usual Microsoft Windows® message that "Hadsm has crashed do you want to report it to Microsoft?". It is well worth trying to bring up the BOINC Daemon and exit it BEFORE clicking 'Don't Sent'. It might be wise to take a backup to a different from normal location. Starting the BOINC Client Software again will often allow it continue without error.

Line-By-Line Explanation

And now it has restarted processing. There is little difference between "Resuming" and "Restarting", "Resuming" occurs if the Result's information is still resident in memory and the "Restarting" indicates a reload of the in-progress information.
  • Unrecoverable error for result '(result)' ( - exit code -'(number)' ('(hex-number)'))
There was a severe error in the processing this Result and we had a "death" type ending to the Science Application.
Need to start up a new Result for the CPU.
This message indicates that we will use Exponential Back-Off to calculate a time interval to wait before attempting to make another try to upload the file to the Project's Data Server.
Drat! We died ...

[edit] Exit Code -1073807364 (0x40010004)

This is usually due to a graphics crash. This can happen because something else is using the graphics, or alternatively you're displaying the graphics and kill the graphics window via Task manager or answering 'Yes' to Microsoft's 'this program is not responding, kill it?' question.
