[edit] General

Often abbreviated as ALU, the Arithmetic and Logic Unit is that portion of the Central Processing Unit (CPU) that performs mathematical and logic operations. In addition to the normal expected behavior of processing these functions for external program operations the ALU may also perform address calculations for other portions of the CPU.

The ALU may be divided into two major sections, one of which does integer mathematics and also any of the binary or Boolean operations that have to be performed.

The second part of the ALU does Floating Point mathematics operations which usually includes hardware accelleration of transcendental functions.
